Iwi & Whanau Mental Health services

Te Puna Hauora Iwi & Whanau Mental Health Services are provided by WDHB for mental health and associated social issues to people in the North Shore and Rodney districts.

How does the team approach their mahi?
We are the only team within the two districts that provide community based mental health services that incorporates Tikanga maori into its delivery. We also provided wrap around services alongside Te Puna Hauora community services and Te Puna Hauora PHO, that includes support for not only individuals but also the whole whanau.

What kind of people do you see?
Though our service incorporates Tikanga maori our support is open to people of all ethnicities. They must meet specific diagnostic criteria under DSM IV, be 18 yrs and over  and reside in the North Harbour and Rodney Districts.

What sorts of issues do your clients have?
Primarily our clients have a mental health issues and require ongoing evaluation, monitoring and management with their illness, medication and symptoms pertaining to such illness. Some individuals require support when consulting with specialists and clinical teams. And usually there are some associated social issues regarding WINZ entitlments, housing and/or financial hardship.

How do you work to resolve them?
We offer Co-ordinated Individual Management Action plans, the use of this enables us to set goals with task allocation alongside individuals with the aim to empower them to eliminate such issues and in the long-term, have the “know how” should the same issue arise again.
High needs issues are discussed further in weekly team meetings, these discussions are used as a vessel of networks, ideas and resources in the community.

How do people feel when they first contact you?
Most clients will come in very anxious or worried about the stigma that “Mental Health” poses, our first aim is to gain a positive rapport with the client.
Some clients are also referred in Crisis, requiring urgent response and just need someone beside them to offer a supportive hand.
