  Parenting Programme

Under the coordination of Kelly Thornton, our Parenting Programme is here to help whanau and parents to gain the necessary skills to provide better quality care for themselves and thier children.

If you are registered with Te Puna you can access our parenting programme at no cost.

Te Puna Hauora’s Parenting Programme has been running since 2006. It aims to provide a supportive environment in which parents can meet other parents, participate and share ideas. Participants gain the necessary skills to provide better quality care for themselves and their children.

Parents attend for many different reasons. Some parents want to understand why their kids are behaving the way they do. Some are feeling stressed out in a chaotic household. Others have been referred by CYFS. There are many different reasons and ultimately people attend because they want to make some positive changes in their life and the lives of their whanau.
While there is a preference that the participant is enrolled with Te Puna, anyone who wants to join the programme will be most welcome.

So what is involved in the Parenting programme?

Kelly meets with the client and talks to them about the things they’d like to change, and together they set some short-term goals. Then they come along to the six sessions of the programme. It is absolutely free to participate.

The 10 goals covered through the six week programme provide life skills which encourage and support parents/whanau to better understand parenting and the value of a healthy home environment. Guest speakers are involved on certain topics such as budgeting, nutrition, child safety in the home and children’s health.

Each goal represents empowerment, support and choices. Attending the weekly groups at Te Puna, participants meet other parents and realise they are not alone, some groups form a bond and when the programme is finished, they continue to meet weekly elsewhere as a group of friends. They also have a more positive attitude towards their children and regain some normality and structure within their home environment.

  The 3 Strands

Thre programme can be divided into three parts, or strands. Each strand is intertwined to link with each of the other strands. Each goal represents empowerment, support and choices.

Strand 1 - Rapport building
The Parenting Programme Coordinator will meet and speak with the whanau/parents. Once a rapport has been established, we move on to the next strand.

Strand 2 - Whanaungatanga (Parenting Programme Group)
This strand is for whanau/parents wanting to learn in a group setting in a supportive environment where they can participate and share ideas.

Strand 3 - Achievement programme
This is the final strand for parents/whanau who have completed the programme. Together, the whanau/parents and the support worker work out what the whanau would like to achive and set goals with short-term mentoring.

  When is the next programme?

Each programme consists of weekly sessions on a Thursday morning.
If you are interested, phone Kelly Thornton (Programme Coordinator) on 489 0190 Or talk to your GP, nurse, or CSW on your next visit.
